Second Best Bed was created to open up a whole new take on the works of Shakespeare. The idea is to give actors and actresses an opportunity to be cast as Shakespearean roles they would otherwise never get the chance to play, by focusing on role reversal performances that are accessible to a range of audiences. Our first full length production will be 'The Tempest' as it was supposedly Shakespeare's final play and is also dominated by male characters with only one female character, Miranda, so will make for an interesting reversal of roles. Our aim is to create an equal playing field for Actresses, without excluding Actors from the same opportunities, to explore characters that would originally be out of their casting bracket, whilst still maintaining a focus on making high quality and engaging pieces of theatre.
