We talk a lot at RYTC about creative arts for mental health, but sometimes the most powerful thing for someone’s wellbeing has nothing to do with art at all. It’s just noticing.
Helen shared a lovely moment recently. She stopped in a car park, in the pouring rain, to help a mum wrestling with a baby carrier and an umbrella. It’s such a small thing. Holding an umbrella. Asking, “What can I do to help?” But the mum’s reaction says everything. She was genuinely stunned that someone had stopped.
That tells us something important. So many people carry more than we can see, quietly getting on with things, and are brilliantly underestimated by the world around them. A lot of us have stopped expecting anyone to notice. At RYTC, this is exactly why creativity and connection matter so much for mental health. Feeling seen, feeling helped, feeling like someone cared enough to stop, that’s what steadies an overactive nervous system. That’s what “of course I can” is built on.
So here’s the challenge. Look around you today. What’s the one small thing you could do to make someone’s day easier? You don’t need a grand gesture. You just need to notice.
