Have you ever been in bed, completely exhausted, and still not truly relaxed?

That moment where you’ve stopped for the day, but your body hasn’t.

That’s something Helen recently noticed. She was resting, but her body was still holding tension, especially in her neck and muscles. And it made something clear. She hadn’t actually been fully relaxing for a long time.

It’s easy to miss.

Life teaches the body patterns. Stress, responsibility, long periods of being needed, or just constantly being on the go. The body adapts to that. It learns to stay alert. And over time, that can become the default, even when things are calm.

That’s where nervous system awareness starts.

It’s not complicated. It’s just noticing. Noticing when your body is still holding on. Noticing when you haven’t really switched off. Noticing what’s been running in the background without you realising.

And once you notice it, you start to understand what your body actually needs.

Part of that is sleep.

Not just going to bed because you’re tired, but being able to properly relax. To let go of the tension the body has been holding. Because without that, sleep doesn’t fully do its job. You rest, but you don’t really reset.

That carries into the next day more than we think.

At RYTC, this is something we see often. Young people come in tired, not quite settled, sometimes finding it harder to engage. It can look like focus, but often their system just hasn’t had the chance to fully switch off.

And at RYTC, creativity needs that reset.

Because creativity isn’t just about ideas. It’s about being able to access them. When the body is tired or still holding tension, it’s harder to think clearly, respond, and express. Not because the ability isn’t there, but because it’s harder to reach.

That’s why we talk about nervous system awareness alongside creativity.

We encourage young people to start noticing how they feel, what helps them settle, and how important proper rest is. Not in a heavy way, but in a practical, everyday way that makes sense to them.

Because when sleep improves, the difference shows.

They’re more present.
They communicate more easily.
They engage with more confidence.

And their mindset shifts too.

Things feel more manageable.
They approach challenges differently.
They’re more open, more steady, more able to take part.

All of that starts with something simple.

Noticing.

Noticing what the body has been doing, and giving it the chance to reset.
