Ask ten people what makes them feel calm and you will get ten different answers. Fresh air and open space works wonders for some. For others, it is the last thing they would choose. There is no universal formula for feeling safe and settled, and that single idea sits at the heart of Helen’s latest video, filmed on one of her regular walks.
In it, she shares a moment from her work with a young person that says a lot about what real, individual support looks like. A student who is usually chatty and easy going turned up one day noticeably subdued. No jokes, no smiles, just quiet. It took a while, and a good bit of patience, before the real reason came out.
The surprise nobody expected
Most of us would jump at the chance of a family holiday. For this student, the opposite was true. A change of routine, an unfamiliar place, and the pressure of meeting new people had her dreading it rather than looking forward to it. It is a reminder that things we assume will be exciting can, for some young people, feel like the opposite.
What made the moment matter was not the holiday itself. It was that this student felt able to say how she really felt, for the first time, to someone she trusted.
Why this matters at RYTC
This is exactly the thinking behind RYTC. Creative arts, whether that is theatre, film, or music, give young people a way to process feelings they might never find the words for otherwise. Building trust first, then letting a young person express themselves through creativity, is how real progress on confidence and mental health happens.
Helen talks through the simple, practical strategies that helped this student feel more in control, tools she can now use again and again, long after this particular trip is over. That is the whole point of RYTC’s approach, giving young people something they can keep coming back to.
