We talk a lot about achievement. Grades, outputs, finished projects. But sometimes the biggest win a young person can have has nothing to do with what they produced and everything to do with the fact that they simply showed up.

We were reminded of this recently by one of our students. They live with a complex diagnosis that affects their concentration, their sleep, and their eating. Their medication is reviewed and adjusted regularly, especially as they get older and their hormones shift, and some weeks that means everything feels unsettled again. This was one of those weeks. Sleep had been difficult. Eating had been difficult. And when you can’t sleep or eat properly, concentrating on anything becomes a real challenge.

And yet this student turned up to every single one of their back to back sessions. Not just turned up, but stayed cheerful, contributed ideas, asked questions, did their own research, and produced work they could be proud of. But honestly, even if they hadn’t produced anything at all that week, being there would have been enough.

What struck us just as much was that this student felt safe enough to be honest about how hard things had been. At the end of the session they were able to say what they were proud of and how they’d got there, and we made sure to add to that list ourselves, because there was a lot to be proud of.

This is exactly what we mean when we talk about supporting the whole person, not just the task in front of them. Flexible, tailored sessions mean we can meet young people where they are, on the good weeks and the harder ones, and celebrate resilience as much as results.
